New Apple Leak Shows Shocking iPhone 15 Release Date

According to iPhone 15 reports, the device would have new Action button controls as well as an exclusive Pro Max periscope camera. The fact that they appear to be the most open standard iPhones ever launched is arguably the biggest surprise.

All iPhone 15 models will offer quick 15W wireless charging utilising the Qi2 open standard, according to a recent leak by ChargerLab, a reputable power-related website. If accurate, Apple had previously restricted open wireless charging standards to 7.5W, with only Apple MagSafe licenced accessories receiving the full 15W. This represents a significant U-turn.

Combining USB-C cable charging with high-speed, open standard wireless charging makes this entirely uncharted area for Apple's products.

Even the halo-like ring of magnets that holds the chargers in place is supported by Qi2, which is based on Apple's MagSafe standard. Despite this, it was far from a given that Apple would embrace Qi2's full charging rates given the significant toll it is now going to take on Apple's official MagSafe licencing programme as accessory makers swarm to the less expensive standard.

Furthermore, the leak reveals a hitherto unreported desire on Apple's part to collaborate with open standards on the iPhone. Apple will be required by EU law to implement USB-C, but not until December 2024. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 (expected releases in September 2023 and 2024, respectively) might have been introduced with Lightning, but Apple is proactively switching to USB-C two generations earlier than necessary.

Also anticipated for iOS 17 is the ability to sideload programmes from third-party app shops. Once more, the European Union was pressuring Apple to launch the App Store, but not for another year. Apple welcomes the transformation.

It remains to be seen if all these changes are simply a reflection of Apple's assurance in its steadily expanding market share or a reluctant acceptance of the inevitable. In any case, it dispels any qualms that could have been present and provides potential iPhone 15 upgraders something to look forward to. especially with more significant changes to iPhones planned in 2024.

In his most recent Power On newsletter, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has confirmed leaks indicating that Apple will expand the size of the iPhone Pro and Pro Max versions in 2024.

Ross Young, a display analyst known for his accuracy, predicted last week that Apple would boost the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max displays to 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively (see link below for more information). Gurman's source is in line with Young's predictions. Respected unknown leaker Unknownz21, who has regularly provided reliable information for the previous two iPhone generations, also supported this.

There is already a lot of speculation on Apple's motivations for increasing its 2024 iPhones prior to the release of the 2023 models. One plausible technical theory is that, due to the 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro's space restrictions, Apple will only include a periscope optical zoom lens on the larger iPhone 16 Pro next year, despite numerous rumours indicating otherwise.

This makes a lot of sense given Apple's commitment to closely feature matching its iPhone Pro versions. Rival smartphones with periscopes are all larger models, such the Galaxy S23 Ultra. In fact, the 6.3-inch iPhone 16 Pro will be the smallest smartphone to accomplish this feat if Apple decides to give it a periscope lens. Having said that, it appears that the era of the high-end, little smartphone is officially over.
